Ed Sheeran is keeping his cool over song copyright claims

Ed Sheeran would be forgiven for crying into his pint over a pending copyright lawsuit – but I’m pleased to report the star has a You Need Me, I Don’t Need You attitude about it.

Ed is facing a claim from two US songwriters, who say his hit Photograph mirrors their work on a track for The X Factor winner Matt Cardle.

Lawyers for Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard say they want $20million (£13.8million) over similarities to their song, Amazing, which Matt released in 2012.

But I hear chilled Ed is likely to settle the case quietly out of court.

He has not commented but my insider says Ed is adamant the messy business won’t eat into his time off. I’m told: “Ed’s not letting it affect him.

“He’s supercool and says that’s what he’s got lawyers for. It’s interesting that two writers are suing, when there were five on the song credits.

“The figure is outrageous and it won’t be anything like that. The guys suing will be on a no-costs basis, whereas Ed has to pay his side, so it will definitely be settled quietly and quickly out of court.”

Copyright lawsuits in the jittery music business have “gone up a notch”, after last year’s successful action by Marvin Gaye’s family over “the vibe” in Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams’s hit Blurred Lines, says my source.

Matt, however, was quick to distance himself from it all, tweeting: “This is not my lawsuit. I think Ed is a genius and 100 per cent deserves all his success.”
