Nick Cannon Says Divorce Is The ‘Absolute Worst’ While Explaining Why He Released Freestyle ‘Divorce Papers’

Nick Cannon is once again opening up about releasing his new freestyle rap “Divorce Papers.” In it, Cannon raps about his split from Mariah Carey and co-parenting their twin children Moroccan and Monroe.
In an interview with the online knowledge base Genius, Cannon explained that he dropped “Divorce Papers” as a response to media reports that he was holding up the divorce process because he was refusing to sign the paperwork. “I was like, ‘You want divorce papers, well, here you go!’ ... The writing process was and continues to be therapeutic for me,” he said.
The “America’s Got Talent” host also said his divorce from Carey has been extremely “draining.” Cannon explained: “It’s the absolute worst. Everyone wants to move on but you are forced to go through all of this litigious government bulls--- that can force unwanted confrontation.”
According to Cannon, the hardest thing about his divorce is having to co-parent with the “Obsessed” singer. He told the outlet that it’s “painful” having to drop off his kids at her place. “One day as my daughter was giving me a hug goodbye, my eyes welled up, and she looked at me and said, ‘Daddy, why do you have tears in your eyes?’ and I told her it was because I love her,” he recalled. “I told her it was because I love her. She understood, she is a genius. She just hugged me harder and said I love you, too. Waterworks!”
Last week, Cannon told the hip-hop site that he was hesitant about releasing “Divorce Papers” because he didn’t want his lyrics to be taken the wrong way. The actor and TV personality explained that creating the song was a “creative way” for him to vent some of his frustrations. “The last thing I would ever want to do is add fuel to the fire, especially a fire that was fabricated by the press,” he told the site.
Cannon filed for divorce from Carey in 2014 after six years of marriage. TMZ reported this month that Carey was frustrated with her estranged husband because she’s ready to officially end their marriage but he’s refusing to sign off on the divorce. However, Cannon tweeted that the rumor was a “lie.”
