'Ninja Turtles 2' And 'X-Men' Drop Hard As 'Angry Birds' Tops $300M

It was a grim weekend for most holdovers, which makes sense with three “something for everyone” releases debuting yesterday.
The “much better than the original” sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows earned around $4 million yesterday, for a drop of 68% from last Friday. The good news is that the 2014 installment also fell 68% on its second Friday, so it doesn’t look like the sequel is (thus far) playing any less leggy than the first film. But the Paramount/Viacom Inc. release is still doing 50% of the grosses as the first movie, meaning we’re looking at a $13m weekend (-61%), a $60m ten-day cume, and a likely final domestic gross of just over/under $100m.
Also underperforming in comparison to its predecessor(s) is X-Men: Apocalypse, which earned around $2.75 million on Friday (-58%) for a likely $9.4m weekend (-59%) and $135.7m 17-day cume. The good news is that it won’t be the lowest-grossing X-Men movie after tomorrow, as it’ll pass the $132m domestic total for The Wolverine.

The bad news is that it’s dropping harder on weekend three than X-Men: The Last Stand (-52%) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (-53%) and will still struggle to top the $157m cume of the original X-Men. Now we’ll see how it holds up overseas tomorrow, but it lost a bunch of its screens in China to Warcraft, and that’s where a lot of its big foreign business came from last week. Still, it’s well over $400m worldwide and will hopefully crawl to $500m global at worst. We’ll see if it is the Ice Age of comic book superhero franchises.
Me Before You got whacked in its second weekend as well, earning $3.07 million (-61%) on its second Friday for a new $30.6m cume. The romantic drama (which isn’t terribly good, mostly because it tells most of its story by the end of the first act) should earn around $9.2m (-50%) in weekend two for a new $36.8m ten-day cume. That’s still solid for a $20m production (it also has $15.2m overseas), but it may not be the leggy hit that I was hoping for even with no relative competition for a while. We’ll see.
