8 Wishes for Drake & Kanye West's Mystery Project

By | On September 09, 2016

It’s safe to say that Kanye West has been a little busy lately. Not only did he throw a (much-maligned) fashion show yesterday to launch the new season of his Yeezy line, but the multi-hyphenate dropped a bombshell in a recent interview with Vogue when he announced he is hard at work making music with the one and only Drake. (Said West: “We’re just working on music, working on a bunch of music together, just having fun going into the studio. We’re working on an album, so there’s some exciting things coming up soon.”) The news, which was alluded to on a billboard Drake put up in Los Angeles that included the logos for Kanye’s GOOD Music and Drake’s OVO imprints, has already spurred lots of speculation and buzz. Is this going to be an album or mixtape? Who else is involved? How will the duo coalesce? As we wait with baited breath to see how their collaboration shapes up, here are eight things we’d like to see on their new mystery project.

Kanye Confirms Drake Collaboration

1. Monster Collaborations

It goes without saying that both West and Drake would be able to call on whoever they wanted to hit the studio, so it’d only be fitting if the duo recruited on some of their famous friends to appear on the new project. Whether it’s superstars like Beyonce or Jay Z or the likes of Chance the Rapper or Anderson Paak, it’d be a no-brainer to load up on star-power and give some other names a chance to shine. Come to think of it, with West currently working with Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun, could a Bieber-Drake-Kanye track be in our future?

2. Radio Friendly Singles

Drake has been on a roll with a variety of radio-friendly mainstream singles that please both fans of the rapper and audiences at large, from “Hotline Bling” and “One Dance.” It’d be only fitting that he and West concoct a worthy follow-up for dance floors across the country. A pop-friendly track would be all the more welcome considering West’s Life of Pablo failed to include any bona fide radio smashes, so we’re long overdue for a Kanye single that soars to the top of the charts.

3. Thoughtful Tracks

West’s main brand is that he’s proudly outspoken about whatever is on his mind and there could be no better time than now to hear what he has to say; not about Taylor Swift (more on her later), but about the issues that matter. With the presidential election coming up, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the debate with Colin Kaepernick and the National Anthem, it could be interesting to get his unique and eloquent take on the events of today through music and not in a rambling speech like the one he gave at last month’s Video Music Awards.

4. Availability Everywhere

Let’s hope that whenever the Kanye-Drake joint project comes out, it’s available anywhere and not exclusive to just one streaming service, such as when Frank Ocean released his much-hyped Blonde only on Apple Music to the envy of all Spotify users. However beggars can’t be choosers, so we’ll even be happy as long as it doesn’t come out exclusively on Tidal.

5. No Delays

Ever the perfectionist, when Kanye West released Life of Pablo last winter he delayed the release of the album by a number of days, then pulled it to work on it some more, and the whole thing just became a tease. (Don’t even get us started on Ocean’s Blonde rollout.) So, it’d be ideal that when Kanye and Drake’s joint collaboration finally comes out that they choose a date and stick with it. Or at the very least, not pull the album once it’s out there.

6. A Drake-Rihanna Love Ballad

Following Rihanna and Drake’s appearance at last month’s Video Music Awards, in which Drizzy awarded the pop star the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and proclaimed to the audience that he loved Rihanna since he was 22 years-old, the two have been on the kind of whirlwind romance that tabloids can only dream of. From hitting the clubs in New York City to the two kissing on stage during a recent Drake concert in Miami, it could be interesting to hear about Drake’s side of things in a song. Some of Drizzy’s best tracks are when he gets tender and heartfelt, and there’s no better time to lay his heart on the line than now.

7. No Taylor Swift References

There’s one thing we know we don’t want to hear on a Kanye-Drake album: Kanye continuing his feud with Taylor Swift. His Life of Pablo was an artistic tour de force, but the only thing many took away from it was his infamous line in single “Famous” when he raps, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex.” It not only distracted from the genius of the album but continued the narrative that Kanye is a bully. West’s feud with Swift is old news, so hopefully he steers clear from adding more fuel to the firestorm.

8. A Tour

Drake is currently on the Summer 16 Tour with Future and Kanye is making the rounds performing tracks from Pablo, but having the duo tour together to support their new project would be music to many fans ears. Two superstars on one night performing together would instantly make it the hottest ticket in town.
